I would like to take this
opportunity to introduce
myself and welcome you to
our classroom. My name is
Andrea Abell, I am the
teacher and Renee Sturgis
and Linda Dudek are the
paraprofessionals in our
classroom.
In our classroom we base
many of our activities on a
weekly or monthly theme. We
focus on literacy
activities, read stories, do
art projects, cooking, and
play games that coordinate
with our theme. Students do
table work in the morning
each day, this is where they
work on skills such as fine
motor and sorting. We also
have Morning Meeting each
morning. This is a time for
us to get together as a
group and take attendance,
talk about the weather,
calendar, and the daily
schedule. Then we read
News-2-You. News-2-You is a
program that we use to
familiarize students with
real world news stories.
During these activities we
work on enhancing our
communication and literacy
skills. We also create a
grocery list and shop for
items related to the weekly
News-2-You recipe.

We eat lunch around 11:00
and we brush our teeth
afterwards. Building on
independence is very
important to us. Leisure
time follows. Leisure time
gives students the
opportunity to relax, play
on the computer, visit
friends, watch TV, or listen
to music. Students have a
choice in what they would
enjoy doing during leisure
time. In the afternoon we
may make an art project,
play a game, cook, or do a
sensory activity that
relates to our weekly theme.

Our classroom goes
out into the community to
Kroger and the Bowling Alley
once per week. We go to work
at Firenze’s Restaurant once
per week too. One staff
member will take one student
at a time on a rotating
basis. We also have swimming
once a week, Tuesday
afternoon, on the same type
of rotating schedule.
If you have any
questions or concerns, feel
free to call me or stop in.
I have an open door policy.
