Our classroom works on three main goal
areas pre-vocational skills, communication
skills, self-help skills, and pre-academic
skills:
Students work on pre-vocational skills
each morning by completing tasks such as
sorting, packaging, assembling, counting,
and identifying objects. These
pre-vocational tasks assist students in not
only learning different skills, but also
reinforcing fine motor skills.
Students work on communication skills
through the use of pictographs and
object/photo choice. Students use
pictographs for daily schedules, snack
requests, grocery shopping, cooking, circle
time, and various other activities.
Self-Help skills are embedded into many
daily activities. Skills such as tooth brushing, toileting, grooming, hand
washing, and appropriate table manners are
worked on daily. Along with the daily
activities, students focus on improving
their fine and gross motor skills during
table work, art, and grooming.
Students
work on pre-academic
skills in the areas
of English Language Arts,
Mathematics, and Science
throughout the day. These
skills include learning
letters and numbers,
practicing handwriting,
recognizing text, using
attributes to make requests,
learning patterns, and
discussing weather. Students
practice and learn these
skills both independently
and as a group. Homework is
sent home twice a month to
reinforce the skills
students are learning in
class.
