bullet  Functional Curriculum

What is it?

A curriculum developed to focus on pre-vocational, daily living, leisure, communication, and community based instruction.  This curriculum promotes independence while preparing students for post-secondary adult living

Where does it come from?

Our Functional Curriculum is aligned with the Extended Grade Level Content Expectations (EGLCE) which currently addresses participation in the areas of Math, English Language Arts (ELA), and Science.  This alignment provides our students’ access to the General Education Curriculum for the State of Michigan.

 

Pre-vocational Skills

Extended Grade Level Content Expectations (EGLCE) for Math:

  • Organize data by sorting pictures or objects by color and shape.

 

  • Compare size between two like objects (sorts by size).

 

  • Indentify which of 2 choices is needed to answer a question or solve a problem (chooses object/activity and responds to simple questions).

 

  • Follow a physical activity pattern/sequence (follows a job sequence or multiple step directions).

 

  • Demonstrate finding targeted areas/objects (finds specific locations in school building).

 

Extended Grade Level Content Expectations (EGLCE) for Science:

  • Indentify and/or demonstrate everyday routines related to the conservation of natural resources (recycling).

 

  • Recognizes direction (up/down and push/pull).

 

Daily Living and Leisure Skills

 Extended Grade Level Content Expectations (EGLCE) for ELA:

  • Uses sound cues and structural cues to recognize frequently encountered words paired with pictures and/or objects (safety, self help, and community related information).

 

  • Uses processes to construct and/or convey meaning (develops alternate communication skills and increases vocabulary and uses language effectively).

 

  • Uses language to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes (asking questions, sharing information, using polite expressions, using appropriate body language).

 

Extended Grade Level Content Expectations (EGLCE) for Science:

  • Respond to and/or asks questions about the world based on observation or experience (answers yes or no, makes choices among objects).

 

  • Indentify and/or use simple devices (switch activated activities, electronic games/toys).

 

  • Indentify and/or explore activities in which technology is used every day (computer, television, appliances).

 

  • Develop awareness of personal information (name, indentifies self and peers in photographs).

 

  • Indentify and/or explore science activities that relate to the world around them (identifies activities associated with various seasons, arts and crafts, sensory experiences, cooking).

 

  • Develop an awareness of the natural world (indoors/outdoors, cold/hot, wet/dry, weather conditions

 

  • Indentify clean vs. unclean water (gets own drink, basic cleaning skills, washes hands/face, brushes teeth, toileting routine).

 

  • Indentify appropriate clothing and/or activities related to particular weather conditions (cold, hot, warm, sunny, cloudy, rain, snow).

 

  • Indentify and/or engage appropriately in safety procedures related to weather conditions.
