bullet  Thematic Units

We have a different literacy theme each month which in we integrate into our morning meeting, art activities, cooking activities and curriculum bus.  A few of the thematic units we have had in the past are:  Mardi Gras, Earth Day and Community Helpers (Veterinarian).

In March, we read an adapted story about Mardi Gras.  We made Mardi Gras noise makers for a sensory activity.  We also made Mardi Gras masks for our art activity.

In April, we read an adapted story about helping the earth to celebrate Earth Day.  As a cooking lesson, we made Earth rice crispy treats by using food dye to color the marshmallows green and blue.  Then, we rolled the rice crispy treats into the shape of the Earth!

In May, our literacy theme was community helpers.  Our quad chose to learn about veterinarians.  We discussed our pets during morning meeting by using a chart that we made displaying each student’s pet and their names.  We also had the opportunity to take the curriculum bus to Serenity Animal Hospital for a tour.  We had a great time and were able to see many interesting pets!

For the month of November, our school-wide literacy theme was “Countries Around the World.”  Our quad chose Poland.  In the end of November, we had a “Polish Food Tasting” with all of the classrooms in our quad.  The dishes that we tried were: Pickle Soup, Kielbasa and Sauerkraut, Pierogi, Pierogi Casserole, and Old County Sausage Soup.  Our classroom contributed the pickle soup!

Polish music please, Mistro!
