Advisory Committees

There are two major types of advisory committees commonly associated with career and technical education programs.  One is the Career Preparation Planning Area (CPPA) advisory committee, now termed the Educational Advisory Group (EAG), for total career and technical education programs and planning at the regional level.  The second is the program (occupational) advisory committee which is used to guide an individual career and technical education program.  Successful CTE programs are the result of cooperative efforts by business, industry, labor, and education.  The advisory committee provides the organization and assistance needed for cooperative planning essential for effective CTE programming.  Advisory committees can provide assistance in the development, promotion, operation, evaluation, and maintenance of CTE programs.  The responsibility and legal authority for action rests with operating local or intermediate school districts and boards of education which operate within parameters established by law, and rules and regulations of the Michigan Department of Career Development.

EDUCATIONAL ADVISORY GROUPS (EAG):

The EAG is legislatively required to exist in each region to review Career Prep, Tech Prep, and Perkins III Secondary Programs.  The EAG reports to the Workforce Development Board in a region on educational programs and planning.  The Educational Advisory Group should serve the unique needs of the region by determining the feasibility of consolidating all the state and federal initiatives for serving the various career related programs.  This should lead to a more comprehensive, coordinated, and collaborative delivery system.

PROGRAM ADVISORY COMMITTEES:

A program advisory committee is a group of individuals from business, industry, and education representing a cross section of a specific CTE area.  This committee comes together to provide the input and assistance necessary for effective programs.  The program advisory committee provides recommendations and input to the local CTE staff and administration.  All state-approved CTE programs are required to make use of an occupational advisory committee composed primarily of persons from business and industry knowledgeable in the specialized occupational area.  Advisory committees can be established to serve one educational agency or structured to serve programs in more than one agency, the entire region, and the community colleges.  Shared use of advisory committees provides the opportunity for coordinated delivery system planning and program articulation.
