Career
& Technical Education Overview
Students have the opportunity to acquire skills that prepare them for
successful career entry, advancement, and/or continuing education. These
skills should be transferable as well as job-specific, and basic to
their general education, providing them with the foundation for
life-long learning.
Career
& Technical Student Organizations
A career and technical student organization is an integral part of a
high quality Career and Technical Education program. All programs are
encouraged to operate CTSOs as an intracurricular component. For more
information about individual CTSOs, contact the local school districts'
Career Technical Education director.

Cooperative
Education Programs
Cooperative Education is a learning strategy used in Career and
Technical Education (CTE) programs. When used in CTE programs,
cooperative education focuses on the planned development of occupational
competence using employment in real jobs as a source of learning. The
mission of cooperative education plans in CTE programs is to help
students gain competitive occupational skills at the level of business
and industry standards through carefully supervised work-based learning.
Advisory
Committees
There are two major types of advisory committees commonly associated
with career and technical education programs. One is the Career
Preparation Planning Area (CPPA) advisory committee, now termed the
Educational Advisory Group (EAG), for total career and technical
education programs and planning at the regional level. The second
is the program (occupational) advisory committee which is used to guide
an individual career and technical education program.
Perkins
Secondary Grants
Effective October 31, 1998, the
Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act of 1998 (Perkins
III), was enacted. This Act focuses on strengthening academics and
career and technical education skills through high standards and
curriculum integration, broadening professional development and
technical assistance opportunities for career and technical education
administrators, and linking secondary and post-secondary career and
technical education programs.

Teacher
Certification
Michigan law requires that individuals teaching
vocational education programs be certified, authorized and, if required,
hold a valid state or federal license for the fields in which they will
teach. All entry credentials for teaching in career and technical
education require the individual seeking the credential to have two
years (4000 hours) of recent and relevant work experience in the
occupational area. There are three entry-level credentials for
career and technical education teachers.
School-To-Registered
Apprenticeship
Michigan's
School-to-Registered Apprenticeship (STRA) is a world- class training
system that provides teens and young adults with a career pathway for
the future. High school age students, 16-19 year olds, are
employed part-time with structured on-the-job training combined with
classroom work.
Macomb
Area Pathways
This unique partnership between the Macomb Intermediate School
District, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, and Macomb County schools
