Macomb County comprises the northeast portion of the Detroit metropolitan area, with 482 square miles of land mass.  It ranks 3rd in population and property value among Michigan’s 83 counties.

In 1990, the population of Macomb County was 717,400.  By comparison, the 2000 count is 788,149 representing a 9.9 percent increase.  The 2000 count conflicts with a more recent estimate by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) for January 2002 which puts the total population figure at 805,321.  The 1990 Census counted 264,991 households.  The 2000 figure is 309,203.  According to SEMCOG, that figure has increased to 317,276 as of January 2002.

According to the Census Bureau, the median household income in 1989 was $38,931.  By 1997, it is estimated that Macomb County median household income rose to $49,601.

Poverty


The U.S. Census Bureau reports that in 1989, there were 36,882 persons living below the poverty level, which is a poverty rate of 5.2%.  The 1997 Census estimates put the Macomb County figure at 47,088 or a rate of 5.9%.  In 1997, 17,557 children below age 18 were estimated to be living below the poverty level, or a rate of 9.4%.
