The Macomb Center for Continuing Education Units approves training
programs to grant State Board – Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs).
We also maintain all records for sponsored programs and the participants
who attend them. The center is located in the Communication and Management
Training Department of the Macomb Intermediate School District.
What are SB-CEUs?
SB-CEUs are State Board-Continuing
Education Units. For teachers, administrators, school counselors
and school psychologists in the state of Michigan, they can be an
inexpensive alternative to remaining certified.
To recertify in the state of Michigan, teachers who hold Professional
or Occupational certificates, school psychologists, school counselors
and school administrators need to earn six semester hours of college credit
through an approved teacher preparation institute or 18 SB-CEUs or a
combination of both in a five year period. Three SB-CEUs equal one
semester hour of college credit.
Programs, seminars and
workshops sometimes offer university credit or SB-CEUs. A program application must be submitted
to our office 30 working days in advance of the start date. The minimum number of SB-CEUs is .3 for 3 hours
of learning. You can find a program approval application form for SB-CEUs
in .pdf format here.
Applying is easy, just complete the program
application and provide a detailed agenda. If you have questions,
contact Deborah Forton
at
586/228-3509.
SB-CEU Records for Individuals
Individuals who hold the following certificates are eligible
to use SB-CEUs for certificate renewal every five years:
- Professional Education Certificate
- Occupational Education Certificate
- School Psychologist Certificate
- School Counselor License
(SB-CEUs CANNOT be used for
Social Worker Renewal. Contact the Michigan Chapter
Association Social Worker Board, Credentials, 517/335-0918 or
517/487-1548 for
more information.)
The state also requires administrators to continue earning
college credits or
SB-CEUs for a total of 6 semester hours of college credit every
five years.
Three SB-CEUs are the equivalent of one semester credit hour.
If you earned SB-CEU credit from programs
approved through the Macomb Intermediate School District, you can
receive an official transcript of those SB-CEU credits by mailing a $5
check per transcript.
Allow at least 60 days after program
completion to request official transcripts.

IMPORTANT!
For participants to earn SB-CEUs, they must attend the entire
program as required by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). This
means attending all sessions according to the approved schedule
including arriving on time and remaining for the duration of each
session. The MDE and the Macomb ISD review all programs and monitor
attendance. Program planners determine the method for documenting
attendance. It is the responsibility of each participant that their
attendance has been documented. Failure to comply with program
requirements, including attendance, will result in disallowance of
SB-CEU credit.

Getting a Program Approved
for SB-CEU
Credit
Any person or organization within Macomb County can obtain approval of a program for SB-CEUs
by
following these guidelines:
Click here for a SB-CEU program
approval application in .pdf format.
NOTE: Credit will
not be issued if program date changes have been made
without prior notification. It’s up to the program facilitator to make
this department aware in writing of such changes. Unauthorized changes
in the program will void the application. If this occurs, SB-CEUs will
not be granted to participants.
