CONNECTION Employment and
Training Services Youth
Elementary, Middle School and High School public education is available through all 21 Macomb County school districts to prepare youth for advanced education or the work place. Students are encouraged to remain in school and graduate.
The following services are also available which provide additional assistance to students to help them stay in school and complete their high school education:
School and business partnerships which provide students with a variety of activities to assist them in the school-to-work transition, (business employees who serve as tutors, mentors, coaches, or guest lecturers). Available from Working Partnerships* in the following School Districts:
Employment and training services for youth 18 - 21 years, including apprenticeship information, aptitude/interest assessment, basic skills upgrading, career counseling, classroom training, English as a second language, employability skills workshops, GED* prep, job placement assistance, machinist program, on-the-job training, occupational information, occupational outlook information, labor market information, career resource room*, resume assistance, vocational assessments, training for new careers and other services, including bonding assistance. A collection of books on how to find a job, local and out-of-state newspapers, including National Employment Business Weekly is available from the Macomb County Library*, 16480 Hall Road, Clinton Township, MI 48038-1140, (586) 286-6660. Paid full-time community service positions for teams of young adults aged 17 - 24 years of age are available. A service team of 8 - 10 young persons are placed in various service locations throughout the tri-county area to mentor, coach, and develop children in leadership and citizenship skills. Team members are given a weekly stipend plus a $4,725 scholarship for school or job training upon successful completion of 1,700 hours of service in the tri-county area. Students 18-21 years (with or without a diploma) are eligible to return to a public high school for vocational training through the school district's career technological education program or adult education. Training is available in a number of occupational areas including: auto mechanics, medical office procedures, electronic repair, and machinist training. On-the-job training opportunities are also available. Contact your local School Districts Career Technical Education Director.

Six-week employment program for DHS* clients (unless deferred for a medical or other reason) through the Job Link program to prepare them for gainful employment. At the end of the program, the enrollees are expected to work 20 hours per week at minimum wage or above. The work requirement can be fulfilled with a combination of employment and training. Clients are referred by DHS* to the Job Link* program, provided by Michigan Works!* For more information, call Marsha Prose, Michigan Works! (586) 469-5220. Support services to help clients who are FIP* applicants or recipients going through the Job Link program and are employed or enrolled in training is available including such things as: transportation allowance, car insurance or repairs, uniforms, etc. The goal is to place recipients in employment that ultimately leads to economic self sufficiency. Medical and vocational evaluations, counseling, job placement and follow-up services for disabled older adolescents provides the opportunity for persons with disabilities to become independent through employment. To be eligible, the youth must have a physical or mental disability that interferes with the ability to work. There must also be a reasonable chance that the person will become gainfully employed if services are provided. Available from the Department of Career Development* - Rehabilitation Services:
Pregnant and parenting teens over the age of 16 by September 1 are eligible for adult education classes through local school districts. In addition, the following specialized programs are available: A. Class credit toward a high school diploma for Utica Community School students who are pregnant or parenting. Classes are available evenings for 2 - 6 hours a night. Classes last 1 hour and 45 minutes for 10 weeks. No child care or support services are available. Available from Utica Adult Education. Free daytime classes for pregnant/parenting 16 - 20 year olds toward obtaining their high school diploma, including nutrition, teen parenting, life management issues. Free child care services are provided onsite. This program is within the alternative high school. The classes are incorporated into the teens' school schedule. If a student is diagnosed with a severe mental or emotional impairment, they are referred to the Macomb Intermediate School District by the local schools and placed in one of the following: A. Mentally-Impaired High-School Aged Youth are referred to Lutz School. Vocational experience includes: industrial dry cleaning services for quilts, comforters, sleeping bags, hunting outfits and other large items, laundry, restaurant services, car wash, outside maintenance services, and assembly. Severely Emotionally-Impaired Junior High Aged Youth are referred to Rockwell Junior High School where vocational experience includes: work experiences at local businesses or in school. In-school experience includes: wood shop, industrial arts, art, computer technology, drafting, and home cooking. Business experience includes: working with animals, sales clerking, nursing care, stock work and bagging, kitchen work, printing assistant, and stock work. Severely Emotionally-Impaired High School Aged Youth are referred to Neil Reid High School where vocational experience includes classes in wood shop, electronics, computer-aided drafting, and automotive technology. In addition, there are classes designed to prepare students for placement at local work sites, some of which lead to gainful employment. Living skills and employment training for trainable mentally-impaired youth 25 years or younger on September 1 of the current school year is available at Macomb Academy, a Michigan Charter School and alternative educational opportunity, for students who need help in transitioning from school to a productive life in the community. Employment services, including job placement, career interest evaluations, vocational training, work/learning projects*, resume writing, interviewing techniques, career counseling, transportation assistance, and after-care follow up for youth housed in the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center*. Comprehensive services for dislocated* workers, including assessment/career counseling, individualized services designed to upgrade reading and math skills, career assessment, job search seminars, job placement assistance, on-the-job and occupational skills training, employability skills that provides ways to effectively seek employment, including resumes and interviewing skills, retraining and/or vocational training. Tuition assistance, assessment testing, and counseling to obtain an Associate Degree or Certificate is available from Macomb Community College* - South Campus, Warren, (586) 445-7003. Support classes for women ("Transition to Triumph") in making a decision to either seek employment or re-enter school for training for employment. Emphasis is on teaching individuals to set achievable goals and to take responsibility for their futures. Topics include understanding oneself, increasing self-esteem, improving communication skills, enhancing decision-making ability, assessing past and present interests and skills, examining the job market and the world of work. Scholarships are available for those meeting program guidelines. There is an information session where eligibility for the scholarship is determined. Bonding is fidelity bond insurance available to employers to protect against possible dishonest acts by employees, such as theft, larceny, forgery or embezzlement. Vocational skill development in a clubhouse environment for Macomb County residents older than 18 who have a history of serious mental illness*. Referrals most often come from within Community Mental Health*, but outside referrals are accepted. Other services at Crossroads Clubhouse include: a transitional employment program; placement into paid part-time employment; and referral to supported employment* through Department of Career Development* - Rehabilitation Services*. Supported employment means that Rehab. Services helps them to find a job, provides job coaching, and short-term supports related to the long-term support provided by CMH* - Vocational and Day Program Services*.
