ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) - Developmentally inappropriate degrees of inattention, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity. ADOPTION IDENTITY MOVEMENT (AIM) - A volunteer-staffed search and support group for adult adoptees, birth parents, adoptive parents, siblings and interested professionals. (248) 548-6291 ADULT DAY CARE - services provided older persons with physical, mental/emotional impairments or social isolation with a stimulating environment to maximize their potential. ADULT FOSTER CARE HOMES - offers room and board, housekeeping and three meals a day in a home-like setting. In Michigan, adult foster care homes must not have more than 20 beds. Staff is there 24 hours a day to give out medicines, keep the person company and help with bathing and dressing. Some homes even provide rides to doctor appointments and social outings. Insurance does not pay for this housing, but if the person is low income, they may qualify for "Supplemental Security Income" (SSI) which may pay for it. ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES - services which provide protection to vulnerable adults (18 years or older) who are at risk of harm due to the presence or threat of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) - A sexually-transmitted disease caused by the HIV virus which is categorized by low T-cell counts and includes health conditions including tuberculosis, cancer or recurrent pneumonia. AIDS PARTNERSHIP MICHIGAN {formerly Wellness Networks} - A non-profit community-based agency dedicated to the promotion of positive health practices and lifestyles with a focus on proving information, referrals and service to persons with AIDS and the community as a whole, so each may better deal with the crisis of AIDS. (800) 872-2437 AID TO FAMILIES WITH DEPENDENT CHILDREN (AFDC) - Income assistance programs that provide money to families with needy children who are deprived of parental support or care. Administered by the Department of Human Services (formerly called the Family Independence Agency), Mt. Clemens District Office. ALTERNATIVES TO DOMESTIC AGGRESSION (ADA) - A treatment program designed to end men's use of violence and other forms of aggression to control their partners. ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION - A chapter of the National Alzheimer's Association which provides support services for patients and families and education for professionals and other community members. (248) 557-8277. AMERICAN RED CROSS - A volunteer emergency service organization whose mission is to help people in their communities prevent, prepare for, and cope with emergencies. (586) 778-5600. ANG - Air National Guard - The reserve component of the Air Force APTITUDE TESTING - The process of evaluating the level at which an individual is capable of learning new skills. The individual will be administered a standardized test comprising of basic math and reading problems in the attempt to identify potential barriers to training. ARC SERVICES OF MACOMB - A non-profit membership organization whose mission is to help physically, mentally and socially disabled persons achieve greater independence through training, work experience, and other services designed to improve their ability to become more self-reliant, self-supporting, and contributing members of society. (800) 852-7795 ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES - Places to live which also give help with different daily activities, such as to shopping or doctor appointments, or at least one meal per day, housekeeping, bathing and giving you medicine. Types of help differ greatly, so you should ask about each of these services when looking into a facility. Types of Assisted Living Facilities are: adult foster care homes*, homes for the aged*, private developments for assisted living*, continuum of care facilities* and continuing care retirement communities*. ATOD - Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER (ADD) - A developmental disorder of age-appropriate attention span, impulse control, restlessness and rule governed behavior that develops in late infancy or early childhood (before age 6), is pervasive in nature and is not accounted for on the basis of growth, neurologic, sensory or motor impairments, or severe emotional disturbance. (586) 758-2872 BIG BROTHERS/BIG SISTERS - An organization which provides trained adult volunteers who offer friendship to young persons ages 8 through 12 from single parent homes. (586) 254-5930 BLENDED FAMILIES - Families in which one or both of the spouses have been previously married and one or both have children from that previous union. Formerly referred to as "step families." BONDING - Fidelity bond insurance available to employers to protect against possible dishonest acts by employees, such as theft, larceny, forgery or embezzlement. BON SECOURS HOSPITAL - A non-profit hospital located in Grosse Pointe Woods. BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS OF SE MICHIGAN - A youth development organization providing a positive environment that enables its members to become responsible, self reliant, caring adults. BOY SCOUTS - A service organization which opportunities for character building, citizenship training, personal, mental and moral fitness through pack activities for boys grades 1 - 8 and young men and women of high school age. CARE (Community Assessment, Referral and Education) - The central information and referral agency for alcohol and other drug problems in Macomb County. CARE has four divisions: Employee Assistance Center, Student Assistance Center, Substance Abuse Information Center and Prevention Services. The Parent/Family Program is a program in the prevention services division and provides parenting classes countywide using the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting* (STEP*) Model. CAREGIVERS - provides in-home services to enable families and adults with social, emotional and health problems to live in an environment that enhances appropriate independence and develops their potential for personal development. Offices - A facility designed for the purpose of enhancing the customers job search. Each facility is comprised of resource materials such as resume-creation aides, job interview literature, job postings, and a phone bank which may be used by each customer at his/her own discretion. It provides outpatient counseling and other support services to help individuals, couples and families cope with stress, changes or crisis in their lives. CHILDRENS PROTECTIVE SERVICES - Social services designed to assure that children are protected from physical, or emotional harm due to parental abuse, neglect, or exploitation, and that parents are assisted where possible to function appropriately in providing the necessary care for their children. CHILDRENS SPECIAL HEALTH CARE SERVICES - A County program designed to find any child under age 21 with a special medical condition early (e.g., birth defect, cancer, diabetes, etc.) to begin treatment; identify necessary care providers to prevent, lessen and/or treat the qualified condition; assist the family in addressing the issues associated with a special needs child, assist the family with support systems and other referral needs; help the family to understand Managed care options; and clarify/identify other insurance concerns. (586) 468-2266 CMH (also known as Macomb County Community Mental Health) - The County department responsible for providing mental health, substance abuse, and developmental disability services in the County through both directly operated and contract agencies. (586) 469-5275. CMH ACCESS CENTER - The single-entry access point for Macomb County Community Mental Health non-emergency mental health services. (586) 948-0222 (Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Collect calls accepted.) COMMON GROUND - A crisis intervention agency serving the tri-County area. It provides a 24-hour information and referral crisis line, legal clinic, speakers bureau, prevention programs in schools, and victims assistance programs. (586) 949-2229 CONSUMER CREDIT COUNSELING SERVICE - A non-profit financial counseling service designed to assist consumers experiencing financial difficulties. (586) 263-1160 or TOLL FREE: (800) 547-5005 CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES offer different levels of care, just like Continuum of Care facilities*. The difference is that for these communities you sign a long-term contract before getting in, which assures you of housing and services for as long as you live, no matter what happens to your health. CONTINUUM OF CARE FACILITIES - offers two or more levels of care (independent living, assisted living, or nursing home) at the same site. If the person needs more care as he/she ages, they can simply change buildings or rooms rather than move to a whole new complex. EARLY ON - A system of early intervention services for children from birth to 36 months of age with special needs or a developmental delay and their families and designed to help families find health, educational and social services that promote the development of their eligible infants and toddlers within the context of the family. Macomb Intermediate School District/Early On, (586) 228-3331 EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT (EITC) - Sometimes called the Earned Income Credit (EIC), is a refundable federal income tax credit for low-income working individuals and families. To qualify, taxpayers must meet certain requirements and file a tax return, even if they did not earn enough money to be obligated to file a tax return. The EITC has no effect on certain welfare benefits. In most cases, EITC payments will not be used to determine eligibility for Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), food stamps, low-income housing or most Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) payments EASTWOOD COMMUNITY CLINICS - A private, non-profit counseling agency with Macomb County sites in Fraser (586) 792-5335 and Eastpointe. EPILEPSY FOUNDATION OF MICHIGAN - An organization committed to empowering the independence and inspiring lives of persons with epilepsy. EXPANDED FOOD AND NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAM (EFNEP) A federally-funded nutrition education program with trained para-professionals teaching limited-resource youth and families with children to improve the quality of their daily diets. FAMILIES ANONYMOUS - A twelve-step self-help group for dependency problems. FAMILIES FIRST - The largest family preservation initiative in the nation. Based on the principle that every child has a right to grow up in a permanent family and every reasonable effort should be made to keep families together and remove children from the home only when their well-being can't be protected within the family unit even though services and supports are available to the family. FAMILY ADOPTION CONSULTANTS - An Macomb adoption placement organization specializing in foreign adoptions. (586) 726-2988 FAMILY INDEPENDENCE PAYMENTS (FIP) {formerly AFDC - Aid to Families with Dependent Children} A program available through the Department of Human Services that provides financial assistance to families with children under the age of 18. The family must fall within income guidelines to qualify. FAMILY SUPPORT SUBSIDY PROGRAM - A program to assist families of children with special education, classifications of autism (AI), severe mental impairment (SMI), or severe multiple impairment (SXI) apply for support payments provided by the State of Michigan. Assistance is only provided with the application process; Family Support Subsidy payments are delivered through the Family Independence Agency*. FAMILY YOUTH INTERVENTIONS (FYI) - Macomb County's runaway shelter and counseling center for adolescents and their families. JOB COUNSELING - The process by which case managers discuss with their clients, suitability for certain jobs based upon specific criteria. This criteria may include aptitude testing, interest inventories, prior experience and/or education, job market analysis, skill assessment, etc. JOB DEVELOPMENT - The creation of employment opportunities for Michigan Works! Clients who have completed training or who are already in possession of marketable skills. A Michigan Works! Job Developer secures positions with local employers who have a need for skilled individuals, and are committed to furthering the training and subsequent careers of Michigan Works! clients. JOB DEVELOPMENT CENTER - A work adjustment center for Macomb County high school students who are developmentally disabled, between the ages of 15˝ - 26 and who may have secondary disabilities such as physically or otherwise health impaired, and emotionally impaired. The purpose of the Job Development Center is to help students improve in work traits that are essential to successful employment. Although physically located in St. Clair Shores, the Job Development Center is funded through the East Detroit Public Schools. Administered by the Macomb/St. Clair Workforce Development Board, Job Link is designed to broaden the range of employment and training services available to recipients of Family Independence Payments*. JTPA (Job Training Partnership Act) - A federally-funded program that provides employment and training services for economically disadvantaged adults and youth as well as dislocated workers. JUDSON CENTER - A counseling agency which provides in-home and out-of-home direct care services to emotionally abused and neglected and developmentally disabled children and adults and their families. JUVENILE COURT DELINQUENCY PREVENTION SERVICES - A department of Macomb County Court system offering assistance and counseling to children 9-17 years who are at risk of involvement in Juvenile Court. (586) 469-5240 JUVENILE DRUG COURT - A service designed to increase public safety by providing a continuum of service including judicial supervision, due process, and an integration of treatment services from County and community agencies designed to restore abstinence and sobriety to the youth charged with alcohol and drug usage. Assists people with mobility impairment to achieve maximum potential and supports them in their efforts to lead independent, yet satisfying lives. LEGAL AID AND DEFENDER ASSOCIATION - A private, non-profit organization providing comprehensive, aggressive legal advocacy and representation in civil and criminal matters to individuals who cannot afford representation. Areas addressed may include: sight conservation and work for the blind, civic improvement, youth programs, citizenship and patriotism, community betterment, education and health and welfare. LOW INCOME - Income which is at or below 85% of the federal poverty guidelines. The persons must first file a petition with the Office of Trade Adjustment Assistance to establish group eligibility to apply for TAA.
