Low cost health insurance for children
In August, eligible residents of Michigan will be able to apply for coverage through the state’s Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan program, currently being established. To qualify for coverage:
Free to low cost medical services including treatment for acute illnesses (colds, ear infections, bronchitis, rashes, cuts); womens health (gynecological physicals, family planning, sexually-transmitted-diseases*); treatment for chronic illnesses (high-blood pressure, diabetes); employment and school physicals; referrals to other services. Service is available for persons and families of all ages, economically disadvantaged, persons with no medical insurance.
Primary care medical care by a medical doctor on a sliding fee basis for low income and uninsured individuals. For a referral to a clinic in your county, call (313) 815-8767. The first visit may be completed without income verification. Once seen, the person completes a short sliding fee application. An income verification letter from DHS* is required for the sliding fee to be in effect for a second appointment. Without that verification, the person will be charged the full amount. A website summary of currently available patient benefit programs offered by the pharmaceutical companies providing a variety of ways to find help with the cost of meds. Search for assistance based on illness or condition, by the drug’s brand name or generic equivalent, or by manufacturer. The site also lists resources for finding human assistance filling out paperwork or making applications, and service organizations that support specific conditions. Users must access the information via a computer – there is no telephone alternative at this time. For more information, go to: needymeds.com. Assistance in obtaining medications through the Patient Assistance Programs of major pharmaceutical companies with the following eligibility criteria: Macomb County residents 19 years of age and older, with medication prescribed for chronic medical conditions, with no insurance coverage and unqualified for other programs, and who meet income-based eligibility by the pharmaceutical company *usually less than $1200/month total household income) is available from Prescription Resource Network*. Persons aged 19-59, call (586) 263-2110. Person aged 60 and older, call (586) 469-6316 Prescription Assistance website (www.pparx.org) to help qualifying patients who lack prescription coverage get the medicines they need through the public or private program that is right for them. Many will get their prescriptions free or nearly free. This site offers a single point of access to more than 275 public and private patient assistance programs, including more than 150 programs offered by pharmaceutical companies. TO REFER TO THE MATERNAL INFANT HEALTH PROGRAM: Maternal and Infant Health Program services are specialized preventive services provided to pregnant women, mothers, and their infants who have Medicaid to help reduce infant deaths and illnesses. Qualified Health Plans (QHPs) are required to provide Maternal and Infant Health Program services to their members when the services are determined to be medically necessary. Maternal and Infant Health Program services may require prior authorization from a QHP or its providers. Nutrition education and supplemental food coupons for low-income pregnant females, new mothers, and children under age 5 who have medical or nutritional needs. Available from the Macomb County Health Department* - WIC* (Women, Infants and Children*) Supplemental Food Program, Mt. Clemens, (586) 469-5471. Free nutritional education and consultation for Macomb County individuals and families. There are no income guidelines. Available from the Macomb County Health Department*, Mt. Clemens, (586) 412-3396. Free in-home or small group instruction on basic nutrition, food buying and preparation skills, meal planning and budgeting. Available from the MSU Extension* - Expanded Food Nutrition Educational Program* (EFNEP*), (586) 469-6432. Emergency Food is available through various food pantries in Macomb County. Eligibility is determined by calling 2-1-1. Free monthly food for pregnant and post partum women and children up to age 6 who do not receive WIC*. Income guidelines: 185% of poverty level. Immunizations for Macomb County children and adults against the following diseases: diphtheria, influenza, pneumonia, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, poliomyelitis, rubella, hemophilus influenza, Hepatitis B, or voriclla (chicken pox). A small fee is required. Available from:

Free prevention and primary health care program for Macomb County residents. A Public Health nurse provides information and nursing services to individuals, clinics, community and schools. Low cost and confidential primary health care services for youth ages 10-21, including medical care, counseling, and educational services. Two sites are available: New Haven and Fitzgerald. Services are by appointment and with parental consent if under 18 years of age. Students, ages 11-21, residing in the Fitzgerald, Center Line, Warren Woods and Van Dyke school districts may receive services at the Adolescent Health Center – Fitzgerald site. Fun opportunities for children ages 3 to 18 with life-threatening illnesses and their families.
