Schools throughout Macomb County offer educational-based support groups for youth around many issues. Check with the school counselor, social worker or student assistance specialist at your school to determine if a group is available.

Cardiac Support Group – H.E.A.R.T.S. Club (Heart Education and Rehabilitation – Teaching and Support). Education and support for patients with heart failure, heart attack or heart disease. DivorceCare for Kids (DC4K) helps a child heal from the pain caused by a separation or divorce. DC4K provides children with a safe place to recognize and learn to share their feelings. For 13 weeks children become involved in a fun, caring group at local Christian churches. Groups are available throughout the county. Divorcecare provides a 13 week faith-based DVD-based support group led by trained lay persons (coaches) supervised by a licensed social worker offering coping skills and support. These groups run concurrent with the DivorceCare for Youth and Teens/Tweens Beyond Divorce groups. Available from Shepherd’s Gate in Shelby Township. For more information, call (586) 322-3109.
A 12-week empowerment group for women provides information on domestic violence, effects of violence on children, coping strategies, trauma reactions and development of safety planning. Available throughout the year from Turning Point, (586) 463-4430. (NOTE: Intake with Counselor is required prior to attending.) Educational/support groups are offered throughout the year for mothers and their children who are survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. Individuals are placed in specific groups according to their experience and age. Groups provide information on various topics including domestic violence, sexual assault, trauma reactions, coping strategies, and safety planning. Child care is available. The Dual Recovery Anonymous Group, using the 12 -step model, provides peer-to-peer support for adults managing recovery from both mental illness and substance use disorders. Support group for adults (Project SAFE Supportive Activities for Everyone) are generally held on a Friday or Saturday evening from 5:30 - 8:30 P.M. at various locations in Macomb County. Families meet for potluck dinner followed by supervised play for the children and support group for parents. Support group for compulsive gamblers. Gamblers Anonymous is a proven program of recovery that will help end gambling and learn how to live a happier life. Support group for family and friends of gambling addicts. GAM-ANON is a group of family and friends of gambling addicts who are seeking to find workable solutions to their mutual problems. Grief support group for youth, 3 - 18 years and their parents or guardians who have experienced the death of a family member, friend or significant other. Available free in Macomb County in St. Clair Shores and Clinton Township. Offered by Sand Castles, a division of the Hospices of Henry Ford. An Intake Interview is necessary prior to attending. Three-day camp (“Camp Erin”) for youth in first grade through twelfth grade is available every summer for those who have experienced a significant loss due to death. Participants learn through specialized group sessions and art/play activities. Camp is offered at no charge, however, donations are accepted and needed. Registration begins in Spring. Camp is limited to 125 campers, so apply early. “Camp Erin” is held every August. A support group facilitated by a professional for adult friends and relatives of persons who have died by suicide. Survivors of Suicide (SOS) aids the healing process by providing information and resources and allowing members to share their feelings in a non-judgmental and confidential setting. Christian mentoring (Mr. & Mrs. Marriage Ministry) connects couples to build better marriages. This group exists to help form positive relationships, to provide resources and skills to help build life-long marriages. These marriage building classes are held during the spring and fall. Support groups for those with mental illness using an open format, which means groups are ongoing, and individuals have the option of attending when it is convenient for them. The open format allows individuals to feel some degree of anonymity, and to participate, as they are comfortable. All meetings are free of charge.
