bullet  International Academy of Macomb

International Academy of Macomb (IAM)
The International Academy of Macomb (IAM) is a public, tuition-free, high school for students from 18 Macomb County districts.  IA Macomb provides a unique blend of rigorous academic standards, practical career-related experiences, and intercultural learning opportunities focused on a very challenging and engaging curriculum.  The Academy features the world-renowned International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme as the centerpiece of the 11th and 12th grade curriculum.

IA Macomb is located on the campus of Chippewa Valley High School in Clinton Township.  Each year, the IAM will accept 125 9th grade students, reaching a capacity of 500 students by 2011, with the first graduating class in 2012.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
The IB is a demanding curriculum leading to an internationally respected and accepted high school diploma.  The IB curriculum is focused in six areas mathematics, science, world literature, world history, a second language, and fine arts.

The IB Diploma, along with intensive language instruction and cross-cultural training, is intended to facilitate international understanding and competency.  These learning experiences provide students with the intellectual, social, and critical perspectives necessary to succeed in highly competitive learning and work environments.  To earn an IB Diploma, students take a test in each subject area at the conclusion of their senior year.  These tests may qualify students to earn college credits.

IAM Eligibility
Successful, college-bound students with a sincere desire for an academically challenging and international education are eligible if they meet the following criteria:

  1. Are registered in one of the 18 participating districts prior to attending the Academy.
  2. Will be entering 9th grade in fall 2009.
  3. Have demonstrated competency on an admission test that covers mathematics, English usage, and writing.
  4. Have taken Algebra I or a higher mathematics class in 8th grade and/or have passed the mathematics placement test.
  5. Have submitted an application packet to the IA Macomb.

Admission
Students qualify for admission based on completion of the application process, academic records, and placement test results.  Each district is allotted a specific number of seats at the IAM.  If student interest exceeds available space, enrollment will be determined by both testing and lottery results.  Local districts will notify applicants of the date/place/time of the lottery and lottery results.
