Distance Learning

 bullet  Overview
For some, Distance Learning is limited to the notion of low enrollment classes, linking a handful of students in one school district with a handful of students in others to extend the curricular offerings in all school districts involved. For us, at the Macomb Intermediate School District, Distance Learning is that and so much more! Curriculum and Professional Development are enhanced and extended through on-line courses, virtual field trips to zoos, museums and science centers, collaborative events linking students from around the county to around the state to around the world, and special events linking to our students to authors and specialists. In short, we bring a world of resources to our students each and every day.

If you have questions or need more information about distance learning via compressed video at the Macomb ISD, please contact Arnie Comer via email at  AComer@misd.net.

bullet  A.S.K. (Author, Specialist, Knowledge)

ASK Schedule for the 2012-2013 School Year

There is a new look to this schedule and with more details on how these programs will fit into the Core Curriculum. We hope you like it!

Please be sure to check your school calendar before registering for these programs.

The ASK Program, (Authors Specialist, and Knowledge), provides students with the opportunity to interview an author or a knowledgeable subject specialist in the topic they are reading about in the novel. The program uses excellent children's literature, journal writing and interviewing via vide conferencing to promote reading for comprehension and understanding.

The Purpose of the ASK Program - Students Journaling & Writing Questions
1. Encourage students to move beyond basic reading comprehension. Get them to tie
what they are reading to their own lives and experiences.
2. If desired, hang the posters of the journal process in your classroom.
3. Each time students read, they should journal. If it is a chapter book, have them
write down page number, their reaction, and questions based on that section. We
want students to tie their reading to the interview process.
4. Write questions that draw out the author or specialist beyond the "generic" questions they are usually asked, a more in-depth question is what the author/specialist is expecting. Have the student ask the author/specialist to explain or describe things they did not understand or are curious about from the book.

Special thanks to Dr. Raymond Kettel who designed this project and shared it with other educators.

Quick look at the LAPs schedule for the 2012-2013 school year

This complimentary program teaches Michigan third and fourth graders about Michigan’s history and natural resources.

In addition to helping youngsters and their teachers learn more about their state, its history and resources, it is also very 'brain compatible'. In order to increase public knowledge and appreciation for Michigan’s wonderful natural resources, EDCO and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources partnered to create L.A.P.’s™

To register go to www.misd.net/dl

Visit our L.A.P.'s page to find out how to gain access to the materials for the program through the MISD Blackboard Learn and to learn more about the program. Along with the "must have" materials there are supplemental lesson plans and resources for you to use as well.

Michigan 3rd and 4th grade teachers: You can find the L.A.P.’s™ materials for the 2012-2013 school year from the MISD - MOST Blackboard Portal.

bullet  Gadget Works

The new program includes pre-visit activities on gravity and air resistance, speed, and everyone’s favorite Happy Crab Hypothesis Sheet. Only now the hypothesis is about what forces make the crab move instead of what simple machines are inside. The show itself is now about balanced and unbalanced forces, pushes and pulls, and tracing the energy flow through the toys (the chattering teeth still make an appearance about halfway through the show).

Registration is closed for the 2012 - 2013 school year.

bullet  TWICE / ASK Programs

TWICE / ASK Website

TWICE ASK Program Registration Is Now Open

TWICE/ASK Schedule for the 2012-2013 School Year

or you can go to the website at http://www.twice.cc/

Follow the directions below to register for these programs.

Please take note that these TWICE/ASK programs are an entirely different offering than what the MISD ASK programs are.

TWICE offers some of the same programs as the ASK programs but a membership through TWICE and registration through CAPSpace is required. If you have any questions about this contact Arnie Comer, TWICE coordinator at Arnie@twice.cc

To register you will need an account in CAPSpace. If you do not have an account go to CAPSpace and sign up for one. You will also need to be associated with verified video equipment. The good news is that all the equipment in Macomb County schools has been verified. But we will need to link you to the equipment verified, if you don't already have an account in CAPSpace.

Also note that there are some program/book titles that TWICE will be offering that are not on the attached list. This is because TWICE is offering these programs at similar times to the Macomb ASK programs and therefore the MISD Distance Learning Dept. will not be able to provide the materials for you to participate. If you have copies of these books available within your school, feel free to register for those programs.

READ AROUND THE PLANET dates for 2013 are February 25-March 8. Registration will open December 3, 2012. More information will be coming.

bullet What is the relationship between TWICE and CAPspace?

TWICE (Two-Way Interactive Connections in Education) is Michigan’s K-12 distance learning organization, founded in 2001. Any school, district or educational service agency may become a member of TWICE for a yearly membership fee.

For membership forms and instructions, see the TWICE Membership page of this wiki.

As part of TWICE, Berrien RESA developed the Content Providers Database - a free listing of content providers and their programs. In 2002 TWICE created their signature event, Read Across America. In 2006 the event changed its name to Read Around the Planet (RAP) as countries across the globe joined the event.

Classes register for Read Around the Planet in CAPspace and are matched with a similar grade level to connect and celebrate reading during the last week of February and first week of March. From this database of educators, CAPspace expanded to become a site where teachers could create, post and/or join videoconferencing collaborative projects and events.

CAPSpace -

A collaborative videoconference project gives you and your students an opportunity to learn with another school or classroom.

CAPspace is a social networking tool for educational videoconferencing. Login to find colleagues and schools interested in collaborative videoconference projects. Create and advertise your own collaborative videoconference projects to educators around the world. CAPspace also provides registration for collaborative events and projects such as TWICE’s Read Around the Planet.

There are currently 12094 educators from 42 countries registered with CAPspace.

CAPspace is made possible by funding from Polycom: Providing Telepresence, Voice and Video Conferencing Solutions

-------------------------------------------

Verification is required for registration for CAPspace EVENTS (Read Around the Planet, TWICE ASK, etc.); but not for collaborations.

If you are new to CAPspace you will need to ADD your equipment and get VERIFIED (test). If you are attached to verified equipment, you will see a blue and red IP monitor icon on your profile page under your name. Here is a link to help you with verification: http://www.twice.cc/VERIFY

Questions regarding CAPspace: sue@twice.cc

Questions regarding Verification: verification@twice.cc

Questions regarding events: Contact the event coordinator listed for that event.
