PREFACE

Purpose: This workbook may be used independently or as a supplement to any textbook in a course in mathematics Grades 8-10. This workbook is designed to complement Assessment 2000 material published by the Macomb Intermediate School District. It provides mastery exercises, (re) teaching, and enrichment to arithmetic, percent, measurement, and important areas of mathematics.

Organization and Content: Although there are no formal chapter divisions, lessons are grouped by general subject area (indicated by the small type in the upper left-hand corner of each page). Two Cumulative Tests serve to separate the material into two major sections: arithmetic, percent, and measurement; and other mathematics topics.

In separate measurement lessons, both the metric and customary systems are taught. The mathematics topics covered include graphs, statistics and probability; perimeter, area, and volume; geometry; and algebra.

Lesson Structure and Format: For your convenience, every lesson is complete on usually one, or occasionally two or three, full pages. Most lessons have the following features: a descriptive lesson title; preparatory numerical exercises; a worked-out example or exposition; ample, interesting exercises; and, for ease of checking, an answer column along the outside of the page.

Diagnosis/Review/Testing/Maintenance: A Getting Ready page is provided before each group of related lessons. On this page there are exercises to review the arithmetic and other skills needed for success in the lessons and there is also a glossary of terms.

A Test is provided after each group of related lessons. Basic vocabulary is tested and there are exercises representative of the scope of the lessons. As mentioned earlier, two Cumulative Tests are also provided in the book.

A Maintaining Skills page appears after Measurement and every subsequent section. This page consists of exercises that review arithmetic; ratio, proportion, and percent; and measurement.

At the back of the book there is a 100-question multiple-choice Sample Competency Test, along with an "automated-marking" type standardized answer sheet. All the content tested has been covered in this workbook.
