Inventory of "Big Ideas" (vital Understandings) in mathematics with    
Examples and Critical Objectives for K-8

This section provides teachers with a checklist of "Big Ideas" (vital understandings) in mathematics. These "Big Ideas" are meant to encompass the most essential concepts and skills addressed in the standards and benchmarks of the Michigan Curriculum Framework. These are the "Big Ideas" that children cannot afford to be without, if they are to be successful in mathematics. The list is intended to be "teacher friendly" yet designed to improve the intellectual quality of student performance.

Free Kick

During a game against the Chinese, the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team lines up to form a wall. During this free kick, they will defend America’s goal.  

Michelle Akers is in the middle.
Julie Foudy stands between Michelle Akers and Mia Hamm.
Brandi Chastain is NOT next to Julie Foudy.
Kristine Lilly and Mia Hamm are on each end.  

1) Record the names of the players as they could line up to form the wall.  

 

2) Is there more than one possible solution using the clues given?  

 

3) Find all possible solutions and explain how you arrived at your answer.
