This lesson is adapted from an
Australian education web site
Key
Purposes:
|
|
|
-
Students can describe a distribution of data
using appropriate vocabulary for central
location, shape, and spread.
-
Students can list the advantages and
disadvantages of mean, median, and mode.
-
Students can construct stem-and-leaf plots,
and back-to-back stemplots.
|
Description:
The Game of Greed, a
game played with dice and requiring only a basic
idea of probability, is played to generate an
appropriate data set. Back-to-back stemplots are
covered (for some students this is a review, for
some it is new material.) Descriptive terms for
describing the shape, location, and spread of
distributions, such as outliers, skewedness,
range, etc. are introduced. Mean, median, and mode
are covered.
