Data Analysis and Research Methods
Course Description and Syllabus
The (Ergonomics) Eye-Hand
Experiment #10 -
Part 2, Activity 3
This lesson is adapted from an activity in
Engineering Data Analysis,
Ford Motor Company
Key
Purposes:
- Students can design, run, and analyze a
one-factor-at-a-time experiment with a
predictor variable that is categorical. This
includes stating the question to be addressed
and stating the hypothesis.
- Students can use the code -1 for low setting
and +1 for high setting of the categorical
predictor variables.
Example: -1 represents the left hand
and +1 represents the right hand, the two
categories of the predictor variable.
- Students can draw the geometric design space
and represent the effect as a vector (directed
number) on the drawing.
- Students can identify and describe the
domain of the predictor equation when the
independent variable is categorical.
Description:
The Eye-Hand
Experiment. Context for this experiment is given
by having the students do Internet research on
Ergonomics. The experiment concerns the design of
a dashboard of a car. The assignment is to see if
placing a knob on the left side of the dashboard
instead of the right will result in less accuracy
of touch under driving conditions where the driver
can’t look at the knobs because of traffic
conditions. In this experiment, students are
introduced to coding and categorical predictor
variables.
