Occupational therapy and physical
therapy services at Peters School
are provided to support the
educational process. Therapy is
designed to assist the student to
benefit from the center-based
program. Therapy is indicated only
when the student cannot meet
individual objective(s) without such
support. These related services are
available to eligible special
education students as determined by
their Individualized Education
Program Team (IEPT).
Medical/rehabilitative treatment for
acute and chronic conditions may
require treatment in a
medical/rehabilitation setting and
is not the responsibility of the
local school system. School therapy
focuses on helping students to
benefit from the educational
program. The responsibility of the
physical and occupational therapist
at Peters School is to help
students’ function as independently
as possible within their educational
environment.
At Peters, we embrace the
transdisciplinary model. This is a
combination model which implies that
the OT and PT programming is an
integral part of the student’s daily
life. It is carried out not only by
the therapists but also by various
members of the educational team in
naturally occurring settings.
Therapists have responsibilities not
only for design and implementation
of programming, but also for
teaching, monitoring and updating
school staff and parents in specific
programming for individual students.
Therapists work with the teaching
staff and parents to develop goals
and objectives appropriate for the
student’s educational program. The
transdisciplinary service delivery
model is complex and requires a
commitment from all involved: it is
not simply a typical “hands-on
direct service model” or a
“consultation model”. |
