Beth has a lot of problems for one little girl. Her legs and body are
very weak so she has to stay in a wheelchair most of the time. She also
has trouble talking and it is very hard for her to learn.
Special teachers are helping her body grow stronger and teaching her how
to talk better.
What it is
Students with severe multiple impairments have more than one severe physical
or mental disability. They often cannot talk or move well, and have
occasional visual and hearing impairments, or some other severe
disabling condition.
Early training focuses on communicating with the youngster, beginning
basic instruction on thinking and psychomotor skills.
Skills for every-day
living are added to the curriculum as student progress. This helps them
become as independent as possible.
These students need a variety of special equipment in the school setting
to help them learn.
Because of their mental and physical impairments, students with severe
multiple impairments depend on other people for care throughout their lives.
Student Eligibility
To qualify for severely multiply impaired programs, students must
have:
- more than one severe physical or mental disability,
- an inability or expected inability to function in other special
education programs
- and a lower than normal level of physical, mental or emotional
development.
Services Available
The Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD) has programs for the
severely multiply impaired at Bovenschen, and Peters Schools. The Lutz
School for Work Experience serves some severely multiply-impaired
students. Students range in age from 3 through 25.
Services include regular classroom programs with adapted activities to
permit the students to participate with other students in the school.
Also available are physical and occupational therapy, physical education,
school social work and psychological and nursing services.
The students’ multiple disabilities don’t prevent them from taking part
in field trips, including camping experiences, going to the circus and to
parks, going swimming and other activities.
Program Location
Bovenschen School is located in Warren.
Peters School and the Lutz School for Work Experience are in
Clinton Township.
