Meet Christine
Who Needs Constant Attention

Christine can do very little for herself. Things other kids learn in school are too hard for her. But she’s learned how to wash her face and hands and comb her hair. When Christine smiles, everyone around her feels like smiling.

What it is
Students with severe mental impairments will always need to stay in a sheltered environment with supervised living, work and recreation.

Student Eligibility
To be identified as a student with a severe mental impairment, he or she must perform extremely far below average on a standardized intelligence (IQ) test and their thinking processes must be at a very low level of development.

Services Available
The Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD) runs programs for students with severe mental impairments between 3 and 25 years of age at Bovenschen School and Peters School.

These programs include instruction, physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical education, school social work and psychological and nursing services.

Some older students with severe mental impairments who can profit from work experience go to the Lutz School for Work Experience.

Program Location
Bovenschen School
is located in Warren.
Peters School and the Lutz School for Work Experience are located in Clinton Township.
