Who Is Hard To Understand

Jason’s words used to come out so twisted and jumbled that it was hard to know what he was saying. This made him sad because his friends couldn’t understand him. Jason’s teacher saw what was wrong and sent him to a teacher of the speech and language impaired for some special help. Jason says his words more clearly now.

What it is
Students with speech and language disorders may have problems understanding what is said, expressing themselves, or both.

Speech problems may include difficulties in using consonants and vowels, stuttering or voice disorders (hoarseness, nasality, pitch too high, etc.).

Students with language disorders may have difficulty understanding spoken communication and/or difficulty in using appropriate spoken communication. Students with speech and language disorders may have only one of these problems or some combination of them.

Classroom learning depends on students’ comprehension and use of vocal communication. Children need to understand and use language appropriately if they are to succeed in school.

Student Eligibility
We identify students as eligible to receive service after a careful diagnosis of their speech and language problems. During diagnosis, we consider the age of the student, his overall level of functioning and the type and severity of the communication problem.

Services Available
The MISD provides a full range of services to students with speech and language disorders. These services include diagnosis and therapeutic management to assist students in overcoming their communication problems. Individual or small group therapy is available, depending on the needs of the student. Student progress is monitored continually while services are provided. Other services include speech and language stimulation materials for parents and teachers, and in-service training.

Program Location
Each of Macomb County’s school districts provides teachers of the speech and language impaired who conduct diagnosis and therapeutic management for children with these problems. Local school district therapists usually travel from school to school providing services on a set schedule. In addition, assistance is available at the MISD Educational Assessment Center and at a several special education centers operated by the MISD.
