School Based Health Services

Why Are Some Health-Related Services Provided in Schools? 
Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), formally called the Education of  the Handicapped Act, authorizes Federal funding to states in order to ensure that children with special education needs receive a free and appropriate education.  A ''free and appropriate education" is defined to include special education and related services.

How Did It Start?
The School Based Services (SBS) program was implemented in the state of Michigan after an extensive collaborative effort by the Medical Services Administration, the Department of Education and the Family Independence Agency.

What Is It's Purpose?
The purpose of  the program is to allow Intermediate School Districts (ISDs) to seek Medicaid reimbursement for certain health-related services specified in a child's Individualized Educational Plan or Individualized Family Service Plan.

    • Physical Therapy
    • Psychological Counseling and Social Work Services
