Question

How long does it take to get help for my child?

Answer

Here are some legal timelines that your school must follow.

10 School Days from
Referral to Parent Notice
Referral - The student is suspected by parent(s), school staff or other professionals as being disabled.  A referral is submitted.
Parent Notice - The required information and consent form is given to the parents(s) within (10) days of receiving the referral.

30 School Days between Parent Consent to Evaluate and Initial IEPT Meeting Parent Consent is Received
Parent/guardian returns the consent form giving permission to evaluate. IEP must be convened within thirty (30) school days.  An evaluation may be requested.

The student receives a comprehensive MET evaluation by a team of MET professionals.  The MET members determine the student's level of educational performance.  The MET makes a recommendation based on the eligibility criteria outlined in the state law.  The MET report is presented at an IEPT meeting.
