Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling Services

Purpose/Function

The Michigan Rehabilitation Service is a cooperative program between the Macomb Intermediate School District and Michigan Rehabilitation Service to assist impaired high school students prepare for and find employment. 

The program provides service to special education students in the 21 districts of Macomb County and students enrolled in Lutz School for Work Experience and Neil Reid School. Students are initially evaluated through their local school district.

Services include

  • Vocational counseling

  • Career planning

  • Driver's training

  • Job seeking skill development

  • Training after high school completion

  • Remedial training

  • Additional medical and diagnostic testing

  • Job placement assistance 

  • Specialized equipment or aids to support students' needs

After eligibility is determined, a rehabilitation counselor interviews the student and assists the student in developing a plan to help them obtain a vocational program.

The counselor coordinates, provides and/or purchases services necessary to support the student in obtaining employment. For example: medical services, physical aids, job training, transportation and maintenance fees, tools and equipment, interpreter services, reader services, employment assistance, etc.

Referral Procedure

The Michigan Rehabilitation Service Counselors may be contacted at MISD Support and Related Services Department or the local office of Michigan Rehabilitation Services.

Evaluation

Student is initially evaluated through their local school district using the established criteria

For Referral to the Vocational Rehabilitation Program the following should be provided:

  1. Michigan Rehabilitation Service Referral Application (complete).
  2. Student referral sheet.
  3. Release of Information Form.
  4. Documentation to support the nature of the student's  disability (i.e. medical records, psychological evaluation, vocational evaluation, etc.).

Referral Response

  1. Intake assessment and evaluation interview
  2. After eligibility is determined, a rehabilitation counselor interviews the student and assists the student in developing a plan to help them obtain a vocational goal.
    • IWRP (Individual Written Rehabilitation Program) delineates the steps to be taken to reach vocational goal.

    • Vocational counseling.

    • Placement counseling and assistance in job search.

    • Coordinates, provides and/or purchases services necessary to support student in obtaining employment.

Outcomes

Placement on a job and follow-up assistance in making necessary adjustments to insure success.
