  • Model Policy on Searches of Pupils' Lockers and Locker Contents
    This model policy for locker searches was developed by the Michigan Department of Education, in collaboration with other state and local agencies, pursuant to the Revised School Code, MCL 380.1306(5), 2000 PA 87.*  It may be adopted by Michigan school districts and public school academies for the purposes of this legislation, and may be modified to adequately reflect local school district policy and procedure.

• Character Education Policy - Adopted on October 24, 1996, by the Michigan State Board of Education.
• Family Involvement Policy - Adopted on May 15, 1997, by the Michigan State Board of Education.
• The Office of Special Education and Early Intervention Services (OSE-EIS)
  Oversees the administrative funding of education and early intervention programs and services for young children and students with disabilities.

• National School Safety Center - a Not-For-Profit Organization providing training, school security assessments and technical assistance for education related organizations
• Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention - provides information and resources on general areas of interest about juvenile justice and delinquency and the comprehensive strategy as a framework for communities to combat youth crime.  The OJJDP have three resource sections which are particularly helpful with regard to school safety:

• Preventing Youth Violence in Urban Schools - an essay collection produced by the ERIC Clearinghouse of Urban Education. This site includes:
  • Preventing Violence in Schools - includes information on the factors contributing to school violence, the perpetrators and victims of school violence and measures to ensure school safety
  • Gang Activity at School: Prevention Strategies - an essay to provide educators with a thorough understanding of gangs so they can take appropriate action

• Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program (SDFS) - the Federal government's primary vehicle for reducing drug, alcohol and tobacco use, and violence, through education and
  prevention activities in our nation's schools.  Includes current news, publications and information about funding opportunities.
