Overview
The Macomb Intermediate School District offers assistance in social studies curriculum and professional development for the twenty-one school districts in Macomb County, Michigan.

Core Democratic Values
Core democratic values are the basic beliefs that unite all Americans. These values are found in the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and other important documents of our nation.

Geography
5 Themes of Geography.

Graduation Requirements - Social Studies
Section 380.11666 of the School Code requires all high school graduates to take a ". . . 1-semester course of study of 5 periods per week in civics which shall include the form and functions of the federal, state, and local governments and shall stress the rights and responsibilities of citizens."

The proposed new Social Studies graduation requirements passed by the State Board of Education (December, 2005) include:

  • Government/Civics                       .5 credit
  • Economics                                  .5 credit
  • U.S. History (including geography)   1 credit
  • World History (including geography) 1 credit
                                         TOTAL: 3 credits

NOTE:  Nothing is mandated until/unless the legislative acts.  Similar high school graduation requirement bills are making their way through the House and Senate Education Committees.
