PHASE 1 - REVIEW

  4. Audit of existing social studies program (optional at this point)
  5. Michigan Department of Education Framework

Note: Staff development during this phase should pertain to review of the existing social studies curriculum, new literature in the field and new laws related to the Social Studies curriculum.

PHASE II - REVISE

  1. Social Studies Purpose Statement
  2. Social Studies K-12 General Goals
  3. Social Studies Sequence of Study
  1. Course Descriptions:
  1. Overview (Purpose)
  2. Knowledge
  3. Skills
  4. Democratic Values
  5. Civic Participation
  1. Course Benchmarks:
  1. Course specific / related to K-12 General Goals

PHASE III - ADOPTION AND IMPLEMENTATION

  1. Selection of Instructional Resources
  1. Types:
  1. Printed materials – basal
  2. Printed materials – supplemental
  3. Video
  4. Software
  5. Community Resources
  1. Preliminary screening of resources
  2. Piloting (optional)
  3. Formal selection
  1. Sales representative presentations (optional)
  1. Approval of Instructional Resources
  2. Procurement of Instructional Resources
  3. Distribution of new Instructional Resources
  4. Development of core units (Note: This step can be done before resources are selected)
  1. Core unit titles selected and sequenced
  2. Unit time allotments suggested
  3. Main topics identified within each unit
  4. Core unit benchmarks (measurable)
  1. Correlated to general K-12 goals, course benchmarks, and the State Framework benchmarks.
  1. MEAP Vocabulary related to core unit
  2. Core Democratic Values related to core unit
  3. Suggested assessments
  4. Suggested Instructional Resources (basal and supplemental, print materials, technology, multimedia, etc.)

Note: Staff development during this phase should include selection of instructional materials, developments of core units of study, writing measurable learning outcomes, and effective use of instructional materials and assessment options.

PHASE IV - MONITOR / EVALUATION

  1. Classroom observation
  2. Reactions to curriculum
    1. Selection / design of surveys to obtain reactions of students, parents and staff to the curriculum.
  1. Selection / design of student assessments
  1. Based on measurable learning outcomes (II.C.2. and III.E.4.)
  1. Evaluation
  1. Collect assessment and survey data
  2. Analyze data
  3. Report data
  1. Continue to monitor and adjust program
  2. Prepare to repeat Phase I

Note: Staff development during this phase should pertain to methods of classroom observation, selection / design of tools for assessment and to processing of assessment data.
