CONNECTION Homeless Services
A drop-in center for homeless youth providing a safe and appropriate setting in which youth can congregate and utilize a spectrum of services from a basic meal to counseling. Available from The Refuge, (586) 465-1212.
Tenant-based rental assistance provides rent vouchers for homeless young adult aged 18 - 23 whose income is at or below 20% AMI. The young adult finds housing anywhere in Macomb within certain price ranges depending on household size. The young adult pays 30% of their monthly income directly to the Landlord and the program covers the rest. After a year, the young adult is reassessed to determine need and, if they qualify, may use the housing subsidy for an additional year. The program has a two year maximum. Supervised transitional living in apartments for homeless young adults (can be staying with friends) for up to 18 months and who are employed. Rent is 30% of their income. Case management and counseling provided. Available from Family Youth Interventions - Homeless Youth Program, (586) 463-3717.
Transitional living and support services (home, meals, material assistance, childbirth and infant care support and education, educational and vocational assistance, and referrals) for unwed pregnant women, 18 and older without severe emotional disorders, history of substance abuse and able to function independently. Education Services (assistance with enrollment in school and transfer of school records; liaison between family and school personnel, assistance with school transportation, school supplies and backpacks; referrals to community services, summer school/day camp, tutoring assistance) to help school-aged children remain in school despite homelessness is available from:

Overnight Accommodations, blanket, plus basic support and breakfast ("Warming Center") is available on a rotating basis at nine churches during the winter months. The locations of each week's church are available by calling (586) 466-4413 during the day or (586) 321-0998, after hours. TEMPORARY SHELTERS IN MACOMB COUNTY INCLUDE: For women and children who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or are homeless: Turning Point*, (586) 463-6990. For single men, women and families (30 days annually): Macomb’s Answer To Temporary Shelter* (MATTS)*, (586) 755-5191. For single men, women and homeless families, MCREST (A rotating shelter which provides 30 days per year of overnight shelter at various church locations throughout the County.), Bed availability is available on a telephone menu 24/7: (586) 415-5101, press 4 when you hear the recording. Emergency food is available through various food pantries in Macomb County. Eligibility is determined by first calling the Macomb County Community Services Agency - Macomb Food Program, (586) 469-6004 (Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). Soup kitchens are available from 12-1 p.m.- Monday - Friday at two Salvation Army* locations in Macomb County: 4820 E. Nine Mile Road in Warren (586) 754-7400 and Mt. Clemens (586) 469-6712.

Help in obtaining MIChild* insurance or referrals to low cost health care is available from the Macomb County Health Department*, (586) 469-5492. Low cost health insurance for children (MIChild* - pronounced "My Child") who are U.S. citizens, live in Michigan, are below age 19, have no health insurance and are at or below 200% of the poverty level and who do not qualify for HealthyKids. If the child/ren qualify, the monthly premium is $5.00 per family. MIChild* covered services include: dental services, diagnostic services, emergency services, hearing services, immunizations, inpatient and outpatient hospital services, mental health services, prescriptions, primary care and specialty physician services, vision services and well-child visits. MIChild* applications* are available at local DHS* offices.
GENERAL HEALTH CARE Preventive and primary health care for homeless families in Macomb County offered through the Mt. Clemens Regional Medical Center* - Medical Outreach Clinic, (800) 779-7178. Preventive and primary health care and clinic visits for the homeless in Macomb County offered through New Haven Medical Center*, New Haven (586) 749-5173. Primary medical care by a medical doctor on a sliding fee basis for low income and uninsured individuals. For a referral to a clinic in your county, call (313) 815-8767. The first visit may be completed without income verification. Once seen, the person completes a short sliding fee application. An income verification letter from DHS* is required for the sliding fee to be in effect for a second appointment. Without that verification, the person will be charged the full amount. Free medical coverage is available for qualified, low-income Macomb County residents. Services include doctor visits, lab and X-rays, prescriptions, and urgent care. As a prerequisite, denial of Medicaid or AMP from DHS is needed (but you can receive Care Connect while your disability determination is pending). Free to low cost medical services including treatment for acute illnesses (colds, ear infections, bronchitis, rashes, cuts); women’s health (gynecological physicals, family planning, sexually-transmitted-diseases*); treatment for chronic illnesses (high-blood pressure, diabetes); employment and school physicals; referrals to other services. Nutrition education and supplemental food coupons for homeless pregnant women, new mothers, and children under age 5 who have medical or nutritional needs. Prescriptions/Over-the-Counter medications for the homeless are available from Downriver Community Services*, (586) 794-4982. Special "Healthy Children" program for pregnant females and children up to age 16 whose families earn up to a middle income and require health insurance only. Eligibility for food stamps and Family Independence Payments (FIP)* (formerly Aid to Families with Dependent Children) will not be determined. Dental services (excluding orthodontics) for the homeless (aged 3 years through adult) are available from the Macomb County Health Department* - Warren Dental Clinic (Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) Patients must meet income guidelines and not have dental insurance or be HealthyKids eligible. A small fee is charged for services. To make an appointment, call the Dental Clinic at (586) 465-9152 (Warren). Assistance for dental emergencies for homeless persons who have no insurance and may make co-pays for other dental programs. “Homeless” includes shelters, transitional housing and those doubling up with others.
