Improving student
achievement and success at
the middle, junior high, and
high school levels is one of
the goals of the Macomb
Intermediate School
District, accompanied by the
implementation strategy of
developing a plan for
secondary school reform.
The Macomb Intermediate
School District’s High
School Reform Steering
Committee (HSRSC) was formed
in response to the State of
Michigan’s adoption of the
New High School Graduation
Requirements in April 2006.
The HSRSC has been meeting
once per month, September
through June, since
September 2006 and is
comprised of representatives
from each of the 21 Macomb
County school districts,
such as superintendents,
assistant superintendents,
curriculum directors,
special education directors,
building administrators, and
counselors.
The HSRSC discusses the
implications and
implementation of the
graduation requirements, as
well as the programs and
supports needed to be
instituted to ensure the
successful completion of
these requirements by all of
Macomb County’s students.
The committee stays abreast
of all new developments from
the Michigan Department of
Education regarding the
graduation requirements, and
disseminates the information
to all district
administrators, in order to
be as proactive as possible
in implementing support
programs and initiatives.
The
goals of the High School
Reform Steering Committee
are to:
- Gain up-to-date
information on the
graduation requirements
initiative and all
aspects of its
implementation,
- Collaborate with the
21 Macomb County school
districts by sharing and
networking with their
educational leaders,
- Obtain knowledge of
intervention strategies
and current Best
Practices,
- Learn the latest
legislative news,
- Be apprised of
Professional Development
offerings,
- Gain awareness of
curriculum support,
educational resources,
and consultant services
offered by the MISD, and
- Become aware of
current school policies
and procedures practiced
in Macomb County’s 28
comprehensive high
schools.
The
Macomb Intermediate School
District developed and
published Michigan’s High
School Graduation
Requirements Guide for
Parents (../HSGraduation/default.htm), starting in
August 2005 and continuing
(4th Edition)
until May 2008. The first
edition was sent to every
Macomb County seventh and
eighth grade parent in
August 2005, and
subsequently was
disseminated to every eighth
and ninth grade
student/parent during the
2006/07 and 2007/08 school
years. School
administrators, counselors,
and teachers discussed the
guide with the students in
the classroom, and provided
evening meetings during
which the most current and
factual information could be
delivered to the parents. A
disk was also provided to
any other school
district/ISD that requested
the guide’s format, and has
now been shared with nearly
every county in Michigan.
