Introduction

Do you think you would be wiser buying a pair of Nike's or Rebock's today, or should you invest that money by buying some of their stock?

The Task

You finally got that first paycheck---congratulations! Now you have some serious decisions: Do you jog over to the Foot Locker and buy a pair of new Olympic-style shoes, or buy some shares of stock and earn money on your money by having it grow for you!

Follow these funsteps:

  • Go to the mall and get prices on your favorite Nike and Reebock shoes. Hey, they're sure not cheap!
  • Using the internet, search through the stock market listings to find the current selling prices of both Nike and Reebock shares of stock.
  • While you're at their stock sites, check out each homepage to see if there is any up-to-date financial news that may affect your decision to purchase their stock.
  • Keep in mind it's always a smart idea to read the daily business pages to keep abreast of financial news!
  • Using the important information you gathered, evaluate the pros and cons of each kind of purchase based on GOOD BUSINESS SENSE...NOT YOUR EMOTIONS!

    Resources

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTED RESOURCES TO HELP YOU EVALUATE YOUR OPTIONS:

    The Process

    1. Shop 'til you drop at the mall to gather Nike and Reebock shoe prices.
    2. Browse over to the stock listings to gather valuable info about each company... (don't forget to gather any extra "hot" topics from the homepages---could be something VERY important to your decision.
    3. Browse through The Detroit News to gather any news items about current business trends.
    4. Interview a lot of people to get opinions---the more input the better!

    Learning Advice

Remember, a good approach to making business decisions means you gather as much information as possible and then use a step-by- step process to make an evaluation of the facts (review Chapter 6 pp. 75-78, if necessary).

    Conclusion

After doing all your investigation and evaluation, you should be able to make a logical business decision...will you invest in today's pleasure of jogging in your brand-spanking new pair of sneakers, or be able to afford to buy them and pay for college in a few years with the stock dividends you've earned!
