Step 2 - Establishing the Research Theme

The Research Theme addresses broad-based, non-curriculum-centered, long-term goals for the student. It is decided by identifying both the ideal characteristics and actual characteristics of the target students and then shaping a statement that bridges the gap between the ideal and the actual.

Module 1: Welcome to Lesson Study

Schools, districts and states may look to their mission statement as the source of the characteristics desired in the ideal student. And while some may think such characteristics lofty or unattainable, Lesson Study teams use the resulting theme to focus their aspirations on enduring and fundamental educational principles, rather than goals that may be more pragmatic or political.

By ensuring that the research theme is consistent with their organization’s fundamental principles, lesson study teams can help ensure systematic and consistent education for students in their school, district or state.
