6-12 Disciplinary Literacy: Problem-Based Disciplinary Literacy Instruction

March 10, 2021 - 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Event Description

**Content was previously presented at the MISD Disciplinary Literacy Sessions 2019-2020

Target Audience: 6-12 English, Science, Social Studies / History and Math, as well as Administrators and Content-Area Teacher Leaders

Problem-based units of instruction present authentic problems to help engage students in the learning process. Staff members are highly encouraged to attend in cross-disciplinary teams representing English, science, social studies/history and math, as well as administrators and support staff. The training begins with the whole group learning together about the theory and components of problem-based instruction. Next, participants will break into discipline-specific groups for content-focused learning facilitated by ISD consultants. The last hour of the session will include time to meet as school teams to process the day’s learning and plan next steps.
Participants will leave with a general understanding of...
  • what problem-based instruction looks like
  • establishing engaging purposes for students to read, write, and communicate
  • guiding students to ask questions and plan inquiries
  • helping students see connections in their lives by engaging in real-world and issue-based investigations
  • creating opportunities for students to enact literate identities connected to their learning across disciplines
SCECHs pending.  Upon approval will be available for an additional fee.
