(NTA) Examining GELN Essential Practices for Disciplinary Literacy Instruction in the Secondary Classroom (6-12)

March 25, 2021 - 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM

Event Description

Target Audience: New Teachers (1-3 years)

This session examines the MAISA GELN Essential Practices for Disciplinary Literacy Instruction in the Secondary Classroom. The purpose of this document is to “increase Michigan’s capacity to improve children’s and adolescent’s literacies by identifying a focused set of research-supported instructional practices that have been shown to increase student achievement and/or engagement with academic literacies. Research suggests that each of the ten sets of practices, if implemented in every secondary core content classroom (English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics) at the unit and course level, could make a measurable positive difference in the literacy development and achievement of secondary students in the state.”

Participants will define what disciplinary literacy looks like in secondary classrooms, then examine the ten Essential Practices in detail. Together we will compare the 6-12 Essential Practices document with the K-5 Essentials documents to note how Essential Practices for Literacy support students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Staff members are encouraged to attend in cross-disciplinary teams representing English, science, social studies / history and math.

*If the State of Michigan issues an executive order this workshop would be held virtually.
