Shifting the Balance - Virtual Book Study

Event Description

The MISD K-3 Literacy Coaches are offering a virtual book study around the resource "Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading in the Balanced Literacy Classroom".

This book study will run for two days, October 4th and October 11th, 2022 from 6:00-8:00pm

 

Presented by Dawn Nacker & Jill Erfourth

Dawn Nacker is a K-3 Early Literacy Coach in Utica Community Schools and an Educator on Loan with the MISD. She has 30 years of experience in education serving as an elementary teacher, District UCS Elementary ELA Co-Chair, UCS Elementary School Teacher of the Year (2021) and Macomb County Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year (2021) Dawn is a graduate of Michigan State University from which she holds a BA in Elementary Education Degree. She attended Saginaw Valley to earn a Master's in Elementary Education. Currently, she is a LETRS trainer with UCS and has provided other various district professional development.

Jill Erfourth is a K-6 District Literacy Consultant in Utica Community Schools. She holds a BA in Elementary Education and earned a Master's in Educational Leadership from Saginaw Valley University. She has been an educator in Utica Schools for 25+ years with experience as an administrative intern, 2nd grade teacher, and K-6 Literacy coach. She also serves as the district ELA co-chair, Jill currently serves as the President of the Michigan Reading Association. She is the co-author of the Interacting with Informational Text for Close and Critical Reading. In addition to providing professional development at the district, county, and state level, she has been a national speaker at the International Literacy Association.


PRACTICAL INSTRUCTION FOR PRIMARY GRADES: Whether your students are just learning to read or building more advanced reading comprehension skills, Shifting the Balance is designed to help teachers meet the instructional needs of K–2 students.


SIX MANAGEABLE SHIFTS: Each chapter focuses on a key shift that helps educators understand common misconceptions and adjust their thinking around some common instructional practices that teachers have been using for decades.


EVIDENCE-BASED INSTRUCTION: Jan and Kari offer busy educators a blueprint for integrating findings from brain research, cognitive science, and child development into their daily instruction, while keeping meaningful experiences with books a priority.


CLASSROOM APPLICATIONS: Shifting the Balance is full of sample activities and classroom vignettes that paint a picture of what these shifts look like in action with a roomful of learners.
