Examining GELN Essential Practices for Disciplinary Literacy Instruction in the Secondary Classroom: Grades 6-12

November 13, 2019 - 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Event Description

Target Audience: ELA Grades 6-12

This session examines the MAISA GELN Essential Practices for Disciplinary Literacy Instruction in the Secondary Classroom. The purpose of this document is to “increase Michigan’s capacity to improve children’s and adolescent’s literacies by identifying a focused set of research-supported instructional practices that have been shown to increase student achievement and/or engagement with academic literacies. Research suggests that each of the ten sets of practices, if implemented in every secondary core content classroom (English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics) at the unit and course level, could make a measurable positive difference in the literacy development and achievement of secondary students in the state.”

Staff members are encouraged to attend in cross-disciplinary teams representing English, science, social studies / history and math, as well as administrators and content-area teacher leaders. The training begins by examining the ten Essential Practices in detail. Next, each school team will decide on 1-2 Essential Practices that coordinate with their building goals. Teams will have time to make a plan for the year (and/or beyond) that includes sharing the information with their colleagues, creating a training and implementation timeline, identifying support needs and determining success criteria.
