6-12 Disciplinary Literacy Series - Day 2: Instructional Practices in Disciplinary Reading

December 17, 2019 - 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM

Event Description

Target Audience: Grades 6-12 ELA Teachers

The goal of secondary reading instruction is to create competent, savvy, independent readers. Staff members are highly encouraged to attend in cross-disciplinary teams representing English, science, social studies / history and math, as well as administrators and support staff. The training begins with the whole group learning together about the theory and components of secondary reading instruction. Next, participants will break into discipline-specific groups for content-focused learning facilitated by ISD consultants. The last hour of the session will include time to meet as school teams to process the day’s learning, and plan next steps.
Participants will leave with a general understanding of...
  • a student’s interaction with reading across the disciplines in a typical secondary school day
  • what effective reading instruction looks like in the secondary classroom as well as in each of the four core disciplines
  • how reading routines support student’s reading skills and help them master content
  • creating opportunities to include student choice in the selection of texts for study
  • research-supported ways to incorporate vocabulary learning, especially tier 2 vocabulary and words in context
