6-12 Disciplinary Literacy Series - Day 3: Instructional Practices in Disciplinary Writing

Event Description

Target Audience: Grades 6-12 ELA Teachers

The goal of secondary writing instruction is to create competent, flexible, independent writers. Staff members are highly encouraged to attend in cross-disciplinary teams representing English, science, social studies / history and math, as well as administrators and support staff. The training begins with the whole group learning together about the theory and components of secondary writing instruction. Next, participants will break into discipline-specific groups for content-focused learning facilitated by ISD consultants. The last hour of the session will include time to meet as school teams to process the day’s learning, and plan next steps. 
 
Participants will leave with a general understanding of...
  • a student’s interaction with writing across the disciplines in a typical secondary school day
  • what effective writing instruction looks like in the secondary classroom as well as in each of the four core disciplines
  • how four different purposes for writing support content learning and increase engagement
  • research-supported ways to provide efficient, meaningful, formative writing feedback to students
