Review: 15 minutes |
· With a partner, walk and circle the room discussing their QRI result. Allow 5 minutes for questions and comments. |

Assessment: 15 minutes |

Explain rationale, definition, assessment tools,
guidelines, and procedures. |

Reading Workshop: 20 minutes |
· Display Reading Workshop Components. · Have participants fill out Anticipation Guide, then check answers using the Comparison Chart. · Discuss Advantages of Reading Workshop. |

Independent
Reading: 30 minutes |
· Display Basic Structure for Independent Reading. · In table groups, discuss and list 2 to 3 reasons why independent reading is crucial to Readers' Workshop - share with larger group and show Roles of Student and Teacher in Independent Reading. · Jigsaw: First 20 Days of Teaching - Count off the group from 1 to 4; form 4 groups and divide the chart into Day 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20. Groups must decide what category mini-lessons fall into: ü Management skills ü Strategies and skills ü Literary analysis skills · Presenter explains categories: ü Management - establish routines and procedures ü Strategies and skills - "in the head" processes ü Literary skills - to become familiar with author techniques and devices · Groups will share with whole group for summarizing information, observations and insights on chart paper (i.e., pictorially, bullets or written out). · This activity is to let participants become familiar with and understand the importance of an efficient and well run Readers' Workshop. · Samples of classroom charts can be shown quickly after presentations are finished. · Display Comparison Chart on Silent Sustained Reading and Independent Reading. |

Guided Reading: 45 minutes |
· KW of a KWL Chart - presenter will record. · Choosing a different partner, have participants read and report to each other the Margaret Mooney article Guided Reading Beyond Primary Grades. ü Divide the article into 2 parts - each partner reads their half and teaches (reports) the important information to the other. ü Presenter may ask for comments and/or questions. · Discuss Purpose and Key Elements of Guided Reading. · Display a blank lesson plan template and discuss parts of the lesson (a completed lesson plan follows this blank one in the packet and can be used by the presenter as a discussion guide.) · Explain Prompt Sheets. These are also in their Instructional Toolkit. · Using the worksheet Introducing the Text, the presenter models how to complete it for the text on Worms (completed version is included in training packet.) · After the above demonstration each table group will complete their own Introduction plan for the article Rolling Down the River. · Presenter will bring group back together for a quick debriefing taking comments or questions. · Print out the suggestions for the 3 Different Kinds of Minilessions from Fountas and Pinnell - remind teachers that minilessons are an integral part of all areas in the reading workshop (independent reading, guided reading, and literature groups). · Show Reading Level Chart and Publishers of guided reading materials. |

Literature
Circles/Book Clubs: 40 minutes |
· Begin with Definitions of Literature Circles by different authors. · Using Doreen Hudson's material, give a lecture burst starting from the Purpose and ending with Teaching Procedures of Literature Circles. · Have teachers read the article 10 Ways Pets Can Keep You Healthier; then teachers fill out the Literature Circle Discussion Log on the following page. · In their table groups, participants discuss the article using prompt guides found in Module 6 - Oral Language to keep conversation going. The purpose of this activity is to experience Literature Circles and to engage in an active conversation. · Display and discuss Etiquette sheet and Rubric for discussion. · Show and discuss Reading Log Suggestions and a sample Rubric. · Point out self-evaluation chart. |

Assessment: 5 minutes |
· Use holistic oral reading fluency rubric on case study student and complete the assessment analysis planning sheet. · Fill in questions 7 & 8 on questionnaire. · Complete evaluation survey for Module 9. |
