Talk About Learning: Student-Centered Disciplinary Literacy

January 27, 2027 - 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM

Event Description

Target Audience:  6-12th grade classroom teachers of all content areas, instructional coaches, or administrators who want to learn about improving tier 1 literacy outcomes for ALL secondary students

Session Description:

What happens when students don't just consume content - but actually talk, think, and argue like experts in your discipline?  Disciplinary literacy makes that possible in every classroom, every subject, every day.

In this session, 6-12 educators will join MISD content consultants to begin to explore how a disciplinary literacy framework can shift the center of gravity in their classrooms - from teacher-delivered content to student-driven conversation and authentic engagement with real ideas.

Participants will:

  • Discover how disciplinary literacy connects to student engagement and meaningful classroom discourse
  • Explore what student-centered learning looks and sounds like across content areas
  • Identify practical instructional moves that spark authentic academic conversation
  • Leave with strategies ready to try in any 6-12 classroom, including classes beyond the four core content areas
