From the Classroom to the World

March 3, 2027 - 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM

Event Description

Target Audience:  6-12th grade classroom teachers of all content areas, instructional coaches, or administrators who want to learn about improving tier 1 literacy outcomes for ALL secondary students

Session Description:

The real measure of literacy instruction isn't what students can do on Friday's quiz, it's what they can do with a complex text, an unfamiliar word, or a challenging idea long after they leave your classroom.

In this session, 6-12 educators will explore how disciplinary literacy can transform the way we teach reading and vocabulary by guiding students from supported practice to confident, independent sense-making.  When we apprentice students into the real reading and word study habits of each discipline, we equip them with transferable skills that travel with them into college, careers, and everyday life.

Participants will:

  • Explore how disciplinary literacy frames vocabulary and comprehension as transferable, real-world skills
  • Examine the gradual release of responsibility as a tool for apprenticing students toward independent reading and sense-making
  • Identify word study and comprehension strategies that work across disciplines and authentic contexts beyond school
  • Leave with practical, student-centered tools ready to use in their classroom
